Session Details

From the perspective of chefs, not scholars, we reconsider human history through the fire of the hearth. How has cooking shaped our bodies, minds, and way of life?
In this session, inspired by The Spark of Fire: Cooking’s Role in Human Evolution and The Art of Cooking and Anthropology, we delve into the story of humanity as told through cooking tools, stoves, and early flavors. We trace the impact of major historical events—from the discovery of fire to agriculture and modern kitchens—on the evolution of our dishes and identities. This prompts us to rethink a simple yet profound question: Is food what makes us human?

This intellectually charged session, presented from the chef’s perspective rather than the academic, blends science, culture, and sensory pleasure into a rich, flavorful exploration.
